GREEN CONSTRUCTION TRAINING

“In order to have healthy, vibrant communities we must not only invest in properties but also in the people who live in them. This program was started to give program participants an opportunity to obtain marketable skills in a field with a future which will allow them to earn a livable wage. It provides a hand up towards a better life for program participants, their families and our communities (E. Moses, 2010).”

Forty billion federal stimulus dollars will be spent on the creation of "green jobs” as opportunities for green careers grow. The U.S. is currently seeing an expansion of 2 year programs focusing on green careers.

In 2009, the Housing Authority began an endeavor to train residents in green industry construction to take advantage of this industrial boom. The Housing Authority developed a unique partnership with Environmental Green Industries (EGI) and Proven Energy Solutions to train residents in the emerging industry of Green construction

The course is designed to expand knowledge of basic green/sustainable building practices and their application to every day use. Upon completion of this course, students have the confidence and ability to apply these procedures and methods as employees in the construction industry.

EGI’s Green Building Basic Course consists of a six month training program, to include classroom instruction and hands on field/ model mockup training. Class instruction included energy efficiency, materials efficiency, water efficiency, and occupant health and safety. Upon completion, students were able to remove old 25-40 gallon water heaters and replace them with water saving tank less heaters; hang weather efficient windows; install environmental friendly decks; drywall; mount solar panels; and landscape water saving plants, shrubs, and flowers. Graduation of the first class occurred on July 29, 2010.
